Sarah Baartman is a name that every black person should know. You wont hear about her too much in the mainstream media. And with good reason. Mainly because Sarah’s body was exploited, much like black women today in rap videos. It is really sick to watch at times. It’s hard to see my sisters looked upon as a piece of meat. And I don’t even want to mention what they do with black women in the porn industry. To call it degrading what be a vast understatement. A little history about Sarah:Sarah Baartman was born to a Khoisan family in the vicinity of the Gamtoos River in what is now the Eastern Cape of South Africa. She was orphaned in a commando raid. Saartjie, pronounced “Sahr-kee”, is the diminutive form of her name; in Afrikaans the use of the diminutive form commonly indicates familiarity, endearment or contempt. Her birth name is unknown.
Baartman was a slave of Dutch farmer named Peter Cezar near Cape Town, which had recently come under British control. Alexander Dunlop, a military surgeon with a sideline in supplying showmen in Britain with animal specimens, suggested she travel to England for exhibition. Lord Caledon, governor of the Cape, gave permission for the trip, but later regretted it after he fully learned the purpose of the trip. She left for London in 1810. Sarah was likewise uninformed of the true purpose of her trip. She was unaware that she would become an icon of racial inferiority and black female sexuality for the next 100 years. The above video is very well done and educational.
This clip is from the Key & Peele Show. They’re making fun of our ancestors being sold like cattle. This is supposed to be funny? It’s an insult to the holocaust our people went through. Our people were lynched, raped and murdered! This is highly offensive in my opinion. It’s a shame we have brothers and sisters who want to make it so bad in Hollywood–they’ll do almost anything.Could you imagine some Jewish comedians making fun of their holocaust? I seriously doubt it. They know the power of images and would never let their people make light of such a tragedy. What are your thoughts? Do you find any of this humorous?
As the 2012 presidential election draws near, the disrespect so intensely aimed at the first family is reaching new heights. Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Internet is abuzz with news that first lady Michelle Obama is appearing on another magazine cover, but in this case it is far from truth. The so-called “‘cover” belongs to that of Magazine Fuera de Serie, a Spanish publication, that superimposed a picture of Mrs. Obama’s face onto that of artist Marie-Guillemine Benoist’ in a painting titled “Portrait D’Une Négresse.” The work shows Michelle as a slave, swaddled in what appears to be an American flag with one of her breasts exposed.
Since the work has been released online, it’s sparked outrage from people calling the work offensive and racist. Not so, says the artist, who worked with Fuera de Serie on the image. Artist Karine Percheron-Daniels defends the artistic choice, saying that it shows an “alternative unexpected reality” by allowing the viewer to see “famous individuals in a different way.”
Percheron-Daniels also depicted Princess Diana, Abraham Lincoln, and yes, Barack Obama, as nude for the magazine, only Michelle’s piece has sparked outrage so far. The president’s portrait has yet to surface online.
Michelle’s slave transformation accompanies a piece that translates roughly to Michelle Granddaughter of a Slave, Lady of America that is said to be glorifying the first lady for triumphing even with slave roots. Michelle’s great-great grandfather and great-great-great grandmother were both slaves. “I’m sure Obama would love it,” added Karrine Percheron-Daniels on the piece.”I hope that someday she can see it.”
If you feel the photos are indeed offensive, mark this the second time in recent weeks that thinly veiled racism has been hurled the first lady’s way. Earlier this month, a Puerto Rican adviser was criticized for tweeting that President Barack Obama should buy the first lady a double-banana sundae and take her to Kenya for her birthday. “Take her to Burger King, buy her a sundae with double banana, take her to your homeland, Kenya,” wrote the woman online. Charming, isn’t it?
