Resurrecting Black Wall Street- Must see DVD!

I just recently heard about this dvd. I think all black people need to see this film. I think black children need to see it too. They need to know about the accomplishments that we made in the past. African Americans currently battle shockingly high rates of unemployment and incarceration, in addition to a wealth gap that defies belief.  Much of this gap is not due to financial mismanagement, but because of the systematic theft of black wealth that has occurred in this country over the last 400 years.

One of the most egregious human rights violations of the last century occurred during the Black Wall Street Massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921.  During this time, the most affluent black community in America was burned to the ground and stripped of its wealth as thousands were killed, jailed, hospitalized and displaced by angry racist mobs.   Over 1,200 residences were destroyed during the riot, and there was no compensation to the victims of this horrendous tragedy.

Even worse, the story of Black Wall Street has been kept out of history books and rarely discussed publicly, even in the state of Oklahoma, where the tragedy took place.  If you’ll recall, Oklahoma is also the state where members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity were recently recorded singing a song about hanging black people from trees.  These racist attitudes result from the consistent hiding and denial of honest and accurate black history in America.

“Resurrecting Black Wall Street” not only tells the story of what happened, but discusses the aftermath.  We discuss the fight for reparations that was never answered by the Oklahoma legislature.  The film also discusses ways that the black community can learn from those who had the vision to create a kingdom of cooperative economics unlike anything seen before or since that tragic period in 1921.

The film features several expert commentators, including Finance PhD Dr Boyce Watkins, Dominique Reese,  Michael Imhotep of the African History Network, and many more.  You MUST share this story with your children and we must learn from this tragedy in order to build a better tomorrow.

  1. I must put this on my wish list. Thank you! I pray for another Black Wall Street the world over……soon.

    • That’s is so true. We did it before…we can do it again. But we have to believe in ourselves. We need to pool our resources and money together. At some point you must do for yourself. No one is going to save us. That is just a FACT we must face OW13. This dvd will open a lot of minds to what we once had. And we really need to get back to that mindset today. I ordered the dvd yesterday. It looks really good!

  2. One of the main reasons Black Wall Street fell, was do to the fact that they did not allow guns in the hope that the dominant society would not feel threaten. Hopefully we do not make that same mistake again.

  3. Thanks for this post. Greenwood was oil rich, economically prosperous and self sufficient. In contrast, the white Northeastern part of Oklahoma was in an economic slump. These white terrorists razed the town in order to seize robust Black owned land for nothing. Similar events happened in Rosewood and Ocoee Florida, where whites criminally overtook the Black controlled turpentine, sugarcane and citrus industry. Past and present, white people have demonstrated their need to seek profit and power (by any means) from the Black collective in the U.S. and abroad.

I think desegregation has changed the mentality within many of our people, at least here in the Western Hemisphere. The belief of placing all of our faith into the chaotic white dominated capitalist system is counterproductive. However, the strategies which will change this reality are readily available. The Black people of Greenwood believed in selecting their own leaders and creating a capital arrangement within the community. It was firmly understood that creating their own businesses and services (independent of whites) was a must, which is blueprint that we need to follow presently.

  4. Like how they have mostly authentic African people speaking on for themselves and on their history. I might have to check it out.
